On Saturday, January 24th, 2026, the Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) celebrated a significant milestone with the matriculation of 2,850 new students for the 2025/2026 academic year. The event, held at the Peace and Love Amphitheatre on the Goderich campus, was marked by heartfelt addresses from university officials, solidifying the importance of this occasion in both the lives of the incoming students and the continued growth of MMTU as a premier institution in Sierra Leone.
Professor Philip John Kanu, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of MMTU, addressed the congregation with inspiring words, underscoring that the matriculation signifies not just an educational opportunity, but a responsibility to uphold the legacy of resilience, innovation, discipline, and service inherent in the university’s ethos. “You have earned your place in this institution, which stands as a beacon of technical excellence and practical education,” he remarked, emphasizing the transformative journey that awaits the students.
As the new members of the university community, students are urged to embrace their roles as job creators and problem solvers, harnessing their skills to contribute effectively to various sectors. Professor Kanu pointed out that MMTU’s mandate is to cultivate graduates who will emerge as leaders in fields such as engineering, entrepreneurship, education, and national development. He stressed the importance of adapting to an evolving global landscape where technology influences industries and knowledge grows at an unprecedented pace.

“A strong commitment to creativity, critical thinking, and hands-on engagement will define your educational experience here,” Professor Kanu advised, encouraging students to actively participate in their learning journeys. He called upon them to pursue academic excellence with diligence and integrity, to respect the values and regulations of the institution, and to foster an inclusive environment marked by diversity, tolerance, and unity.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor also emphasized the importance of personal conduct and ethical behavior. He urged the students to utilize their knowledge for the greater good, reminding them that education should extend beyond personal ambition to encompass national service. He cautioned them against engaging in cultism or any secret society activities that could undermine the values of the institution.
To support these aspirations, Professor Kanu reassured attendees of the university’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its facilities and academic standards. He highlighted the significance of strengthening industrial partnerships to ensure that MMTU remains a leading institution in higher education, both locally and internationally.
Earlier in the ceremony, Dr. Mohamed Alie Jalloh, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Director of Academic Affairs, welcomed the students warmly. He expressed his excitement about the admission of the new cohort, and reiterated the event’s significance. “Matriculation is a pivotal event in the life of any institution worldwide,” he remarked, reminding students that alongside their rights as university members come responsibilities. He urged them to safeguard university property, meet their financial obligations promptly, and remain vigilant against criminal activities, sexual harassment, and examination malpractices.
The event featured several highlights, including an Oath Taking ceremony led by Mr. Ishmael Kebbay, the Acting Head of the Department of Social Studies. The formal pronouncement of membership to the university was made by Registrar, Mr. Bockarie Sillah, while Ms. Aminata Bangura, Acting Dean of Campus, Brookfields, offered a statement of felicitation. First-year student, Mariama Bakarr, delivered a vote of thanks, and the ceremony concluded with a spirited rendition of the University Song.
An act of generosity was showcased when the Alumni Class of 1993-1996 donated chairs, computers, and smart boards valued at Le143,000 to the university, further reinforcing the sense of community and support within the MMTU family.
The matriculation of 2,850 students marks a new chapter not only in their individual journeys, but also in the ongoing mission of Milton Margai Technical University to produce capable, innovative leaders ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. With the collective support of faculty, alumni, and fellow students, this new generation is poised to make lasting contributions to society, embodying the university’s ideals of service, excellence, and integrity.
