The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of Nigeria and the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) have taken a significant step towards enhancing road safety across West Africa by signing a landmark five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This historic agreement, signed at the FRSC National Headquarters in Abuja on Friday, marks a new era of institutional partnership, knowledge exchange, and coordinated action aimed at improving road safety standards throughout the sub-region.
The MoU underscores both agencies’ shared commitment to innovation, capacity building, data-driven management, research, vehicle administration, and enforcement activities. These collaborative efforts are designed to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on reducing road traffic fatalities, which remain a pressing challenge in West Africa.
At the signing ceremony, Mr. James Bagie Bio, Executive Director of SLRSA, described the partnership as a defining moment between the two institutions. He praised the Federal Road Safety Corps for its exceptional professionalism, operational excellence, and remarkable technological advancements under the leadership of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed. Mr. Bio emphasized that the Sierra Leone delegation left Nigeria deeply inspired by FRSC’s best practices and strongly committed to translating the MoU into tangible road safety outcomes. “This MoU will not gather dust on the shelf,” he asserted, highlighting Sierra Leone’s determination to implement structured actions, institutional engagement, and regular progress evaluations to ensure the success of the partnership.
Adding to the acclaim, Major General (Rtd.) Dauda Alpha, Deputy High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to Nigeria and Deputy Head of Mission to ECOWAS, lauded the tremendous transformation achieved by the FRSC. He attributed the Corps’ growing continental reputation to the visionary leadership of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, crediting his purposeful guidance for positioning the FRSC as a benchmark for road safety administration across Africa. Major General Alpha described the partnership as a strategic bridge that would further enhance regional integration and collective efforts to safeguard lives on African roads.
This landmark agreement reflects Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed’s relentless quest to expand FRSC’s international partnerships and elevate the Corps as Africa’s premier road safety institution. With the MoU now in effect, both Nigeria and Sierra Leone are well-positioned to lead a new phase of cross-border cooperation, innovation, and shared responsibility.
