Manchester United have confirmed the departure of head coach Ruben Amorim with immediate effect, ending his 14-month spell at the club. The 40-year-old, who succeeded Erik ten Hag, leaves with the team currently sixth in the Premier League. In a statement issued on Monday, the club said the decision was taken after careful consideration, noting that a change in leadership was necessary to give the team the best possible chance of achieving a strong finish to the season. United thanked Amorim for his contribution and wished him well in his future career, while confirming that Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team for Wednesday’s league match against Burnley.
Amorim’s exit comes less than 24 hours after a 1-1 draw away to Leeds United, a match followed by a tense post-match press conference. During his time in charge, United recorded mixed domestic results, including an early EFL Cup exit, and finished 15th last season, losing the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, a result that ruled out European football for the 2025/26 campaign. Despite significant summer reinforcements, including the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, the club has opted for a new direction, with Fletcher, the current Under-18 coach and former United midfielder, stepping in on an interim basis.
