The Sierra Leone News Vendors Association (SLNeVA) has etched its name in the annals of history following the successful conduct of its first-ever democratic election, held on Saturday, 11th April 2026. The landmark event, which brought together members from across the country, is widely being celebrated as a major breakthrough for the association and a renewed commitment to transparency, unity, and institutional growth.
In what observers have described as a peaceful, credible, and well-organized electoral process, Festus Lamin Mansaray emerged victorious with a commanding 48 votes, defeating his contender, Kandeh Osaio Kamara, popularly known as KOK, who secured 22 votes. The election was conducted by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), whose involvement added credibility and professionalism to the entire process.
The much-anticipated election marks a significant turning point for SLNeVA, an association that has, over the years, struggled with inactivity and a decline in relevance, particularly in some regions of the country. For many members, the successful conduct of this election represents not just a leadership transition, but a bold step toward revitalizing the association and restoring its prominence within the media landscape.
Speaking shortly after his victory, Festus Lamin Mansaray, popularly known as “LA,” expressed profound gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him. He described the election as a victory for democracy and collective progress rather than an individual achievement. Mansaray acknowledged the concerns raised during the campaign period, particularly around transparency and accountability, and assured members that his leadership would be anchored on those very principles.
In a strong display of statesmanship, Mansaray commended his opponent, Kandeh Osaio Kamara, for his courage and commitment to the democratic process. He referred to Kamara as a “brother” and praised him for taking the bold step to contest in what has now become a historic election for the association.
Extending an olive branch to all members, including those who voted against him, Mansaray emphasized the need for unity, stressing that “we are one family with a shared responsibility to rebuild and strengthen our association.”
He further pledged to work tirelessly in the interest of all members, promising to promote peace, love, and unity at all times. According to him, the future of SLNeVA depends on collective effort, inclusiveness, and a renewed sense of purpose among its members.
The election process itself received widespread commendation from participants and observers alike. Several members praised the high level of transparency and organization exhibited during the polls, noting that it has set a new standard for internal democracy within professional associations in Sierra Leone. The defeated contestant, Kandeh Osaio Kamara, graciously accepted the outcome and congratulated Mansaray on his victory, assuring him of his full support in moving the association forward.
Kamara’s show of sportsmanship further reinforced the spirit of unity that defined the entire electoral process. Many members echoed similar sentiments, expressing optimism that the new leadership would usher in a new era of growth, inclusivity, and relevance for SLNeVA.
The elections concluded on a celebratory note, with members expressing joy and a renewed sense of belonging. The atmosphere was characterized by unity and oneness, as vendors from different regions came together to celebrate what many described as a “new beginning” for their association.
As SLNeVA embarks on this new chapter, expectations are high that the newly elected leadership will deliver on its promises and reposition the association as a vibrant and influential body within Sierra Leone’s media ecosystem. The historic election stands as a testament to what can be achieved through collective will, democratic principles, and a shared vision for progress.
