Yankuba Bio Announces Decongestion Of Sierra Leone Port

The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has announced a significant milestone in the management of the country’s principal seaport—the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Cline Town. After months of efforts to improve cargo movement and operational efficiency, the port has officially been declared decongested, marking a positive development for Sierra Leone’s trade and economic activities.

This announcement was made by the Director General of the SLPHA, Yankuba Askia Bio, during a recent media engagement held at the port. The briefing aimed to update the public and stakeholders on the current status of port operations, recent improvements, and to dispel misconceptions surrounding port management.

During the media engagement, Director General Bio confidently declared, “Sierra Leone Port has been unlisted from ports that are congested. The port is now decongested. Please spread the news to people, so that they can come and transport their containers.” This statement signals a remarkable turnaround, considering the challenges faced by the port in recent times.

The declaration is the culmination of concerted efforts by the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority, private sector operators, and other stakeholders involved in port logistics. It reflects the successful implementation of measures aimed at improving cargo handling, streamlining procedures, and reducing delays that have previously hampered imports and exports.

The media engagement brought together key stakeholders involved in port operations, including representatives from private cargo handling companies, transportation firms, and regulatory agencies. These stakeholders provided insights into their respective roles and contributions, highlighting the collaborative approach that has been pivotal in addressing congestion issues.

It was explained that the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority primarily functions as a landlord and regulator. Unlike ports in some countries where the government directly manages all activities, the SLPHA’s core responsibility is to provide port infrastructure and regulate operations. The actual cargo handling, terminal operations, and logistics services are largely executed by private companies operating within the port environment.

The Director General also used the occasion to address circulating rumors suggesting ongoing port congestion or mismanagement. He emphasized that such reports do not reflect the current reality and that the port’s operations have significantly improved.

He clarified the roles of various institutions and companies involved in port activities, stressing that the SLPHA’s function is to oversee and regulate, while private firms handle the core logistics. This distinction is vital in understanding how port operations are structured and managed.

With the port now decongested, the SLPHA is urging importers, clearing agents, freight forwarders, and other stakeholders to take advantage of the improved situation by promptly collecting and transporting their containers. The authority’s message is clear: the port’s current state offers an opportunity for faster clearance, reduced storage costs, and smoother logistics.

The port’s decongestion is expected to facilitate increased trade activity, boost economic growth, and improve Sierra Leone’s competitiveness in regional and international markets.

This development signifies a positive step forward in Sierra Leone’s efforts to modernize and optimize its port facilities. Overcoming congestion not only improves efficiency but also enhances the country’s reputation among international trade partners who rely on predictable and reliable port services.

The SLPHA has committed to maintaining transparency and continuous improvement in port operations. Regular updates and stakeholder engagement will be part of their strategy to ensure sustained efficiency and to address any emerging challenges proactively.
