Students at the Mile 91 branch of Freetown Polytechnic on Thursday the 16th April 2026, raised serious concerns over what they describe as an excessive increase in National Council for Technical and Vocational Awards fees, urging immediate intervention from authorities.

The students say the fees imposed by the NCTVA for the 2026 examinations have surged from 1,500 NLE in previous academic years to 3,050 NLE this year, an increase of over 100 percent. According to them, the sudden hike has placed a heavy financial burden on many students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.

Speaking on behalf of the student body, Patrick AD Tommy expressed frustration over the situation, noting that many students are now struggling to continue their education due to the sharp rise in costs.

Aminata Koroma also echoed similar concerns, stressing that the increment threatens equal access to education and could force some students to drop out.

The campus supervisor, Mr Turay, called on the NCTVA and relevant government authorities and stakeholders to urgently review the new fee structure. They argued that while improvements in education are necessary, such drastic increases should be implemented gradually and with proper consultation.

They further appealed for transparency regarding the reasons behind the increment, urging authorities to consider the economic realities facing students and their families.

As tensions grow on campus, students say they remain hopeful that swift action will be taken to address their concerns and ensure that education remains accessible to all.
