The Managing Director of Guma Valley Water Company, Ing. Kallay Mirwan Kallon, says Sierra Leone continues to face serious water supply challenges despite ongoing investments and reforms.
He identified water loss, also known as non-revenue water, as one of the biggest problems. This includes leakages, illegal connections, and unpaid bills.
He said that even with heavy investment, poor system management can prevent citizens from fully benefiting from water services.
To address this, he disclosed that over 360,000 water meters have been installed nationwide to improve monitoring and reduce losses.
He added that the company is also working with law enforcement and communities to stop illegal connections and improve compliance.
According to him, Guma is using improved technical and scientific systems to track water production, distribution, and losses more accurately.
He explained that due to limited supply, water is distributed in zones, with each area receiving water on a scheduled basis to ensure fairness.
Despite the challenges, he emphasized that water remains a public service, and efforts are ongoing to improve reliability, efficiency, and revenue collection.
